Only 11% Anna University graduates get    placed !!!

Academics say most students are from tier 2 and 3 colleges who do not meet the academic and skill requirements of most firms .

Less than 11% of eligible candidates in circuit branches of engineering were placed through the Tamil Nadu state-level placement drives organised by Anna University for students graduating this year. The drives are in addition to the campus placement initiatives of individual colleges.

An official from Anna university said that of the 24,000 eligible students from the circuit branches, only around 2,400 were placed

Academics said there were several reasons for the poor success rate. Most students taking part in these activities are from tier 2 and 3 colleges and do not meet the academic and skill requirements of most firms.

IT firms recruiting engineering candidates

Secondly, IT firms recruiting engineering candidates from campuses in bulk have cut employment rates by nearly half.

Academics blame non-involvement of industry players with academia for this gap in skilling. “Unlike other Asian countries like Singapore, where industry is open to giving consultancy projects to technical institutions, industry here has confidence only in IITs, and is ready to work with them. Companies don't believe other technical institutions are up to the mark.

Neither are they willing to give inputs to these colleges, “said an academic who liaisons between industry and institutes.

“Students should change their attitude towards jobs. All of them want only core sector jobs in top companies. They must also be open to ITeS jobs in smaller companies, many of which are engaged in interesting projects, “the placement officer of a private engineering college said.

Among those that took part in the state placement drives, IT majors Cognizant Technology Solutions and Infosys picked up candidates from three zones ¬ Chennai, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli. The university arranged nine placement drives across the state, said vice-chancellor M Rajaram.

Anna University's ranking of the 506 engineering colleges affiliated to it in Tamil Nadu has brought out the pathetic state of affairs in a few institutions !!!
